Planning Your Day Around OCD

Why Plan For OCD ?

Planning your day around OCD can be very difficult. You may feel like OCD is always taking away your focus. Here is a simple way to solve the unpredictability of OCD.
What you need you do is track your OCD spikes.
Tracking your OCD spikes can help because it gives you some control over OCD and helps you plan for the days ahead. After tracking a few spikes you can guess how long each spike will last and how severe it will be each day that it is still there. That helps you plan your day around your OCD.
This type of thing may seem silly to some people. Well there are a lot of people with OCD that prevents them doing daily activities and this article is for them.

How to Plan For OCD

So how do we plan? Ok,  let’s say that I just had a huge spike. I know that this kind of spike usually lasts for 3 days so I try to change my schedule so I can do more boring tasks that require little concentration but will keep me busy. I choose those because during times with OCD I need to stay busy to keep myself from obsessing, however I have a hard time concentrating so I save the important tasks for later, when I feel better.

Example:

Monday- 8 (10 being very anxious)
Tuesday- 6 ( still there but I can deal)
Wednesday- 2 ( can concentrate again)

NOTES:

I hope this makes sense to you, this method of getting things done works well for me, so I feel like I need to share it with others out there.
By the way, for those who don’t know a spike is a new ocd obsession trigger.
For example if I had OCD about germs coming into contact with something dirty would cause me to have a spike.

OCD Recovery Program Testimonials

I would just like to say a massive thank you to Ali Greymond for all of her help and support through what had to be one of the hardest and most fearful times in my life. Hell sounded appealing to what I was living with- false memory OCD! I’m very private and the thought of telling someone my intrusive thoughts was agonising. I listened to Ali’s shows on YouTube and I knew the best person to help me was her, Ali made me feel so comfortable, I never once felt as though she was judging me in anyway in fact she made me feel the opposite like I was normal and none of this meant anything. She gave me the tools and skyped me every day I felt like She was in the next room the support was amazing. This wonderful lady changed my life, it’s hard work and determination daily but if there’s one person that can help you recover from OCD it’s Ali Greymond. She’s amazing at what she does and me and my family are blessed we found her because I don’t know where I’d be now. Thank you Ali your programme is amazing. (L.)

I came to Ali with a severe case of contamination OCD. Ali graciously offered me an introductory session free of charge. When I asked her when we could start, she said “how about today”? I liked that she was that proactive and willing to jump in immediately. I looked at the packages she offered and signed up immediately for the “Severe OCD” package, because that accurately described the state I was in. Ali almost immediately became my anchor, my support system and friend through this very frightening and lonely disorder. With Ali by my side, I had hope for the first time and I made strides that even surprised me. I was amazed at how quickly I started to recover. It felt like magic to me.

Having been a fellow sufferer herself, she truly understands the disorder. I felt that Ali intuitively knew when to push me through a fear and when to back off. When she felt that I was not ready for an exercise she told me. When she felt that I could push through a fear, she told me and 100% of the time, she was on point! This was extremely important as feeling in control is such a huge element of this disorder. I would recommend anyone suffering with this disorder to work with Ali. She helped me get my life back and that is priceless. (J.)

Why is it that every time a holiday is near we get more and more anxious?
Depending on what exactly triggers your OCD, your fears may be different. However the high anxiety is a common thread. It also seems that the closer you get to the main event, the more stress you feel.   Anyways, this is true for me every time. I remember that I started to anticipate the Christmas season in the fall and by the time we were close to it I was in full panic mode. So having been through a few of these “OCD Holidays” I have decided to offer some of the things I found to be very good at reducing OCD related anxiety.

1. Create a list of OCD related triggers and responses. This should be something like this:

It is possible that during my holiday party someone will touch the food, and contaminate it with dirty hands.

If this does happen I will take a deep breath and remember that there are probably many other times this has happened and everything is fine. After that I will find something else to focus my attention on.

2. Do not worry about making everything perfect, being a perfect guest or a perfect host. Remember that you are human who not only has a lot to deal with but also has OCD and you too deserve a break. Even if someone thinks that you could have done more, think about this, what is more important a random opinion or your mental state?

3. Sometimes it just gets to be too much. It can be something unexpected that happened or just a crowded room but in case you feel like you can’t take the party anymore, plan a way to get away. If you are a guest come up with a great excuse ahead of time or if you are a host remember to “forget” something that you have to make a quick trip to the store for. The point is to give you enough time to be alone to regain your composure.

Pure-O OCD

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This means that a person has an obsessive thought which is followed by compulsive action. I am sure most of you know this by now. However there is one type of OCD that is harder to deal with. That is a Pure O. The name means pure obsession which means that the person has only obsessions and no compulsive actions.

Here is an example of the Pure-O type thought process:

A person is walking on the cement tiles down the sidewalk

Thought 1- if I step on a crack something bad is going to happen to … and it will be all my fault.

Thought 2- did I just step on a crack?

Thought 3- I am not sure but I think I wanted to, that means I am a bad
person…

And on, and on

Obviously it is irrational thinking but the fact is that as a person is walking they are having these thoughts. So technically they are not performing any compulsions and only are obsessing in their mind.

It is harder to treat this type of OCD because the doctor can not tell the patient to stop a physical action but rather to stop a thought which is a very different type of treatment.

I hope this gives you enough of an overview of what a “pure o” is all about.

10 Things You Must Know About OCD

Over time as my OCD progressed I learned a few things along the way. I know that if I knew then what I know now my OCD journey would have been a lot easier. I hope that this info will help you and if you have anything you would add to this list please feel free to leave a comment.

1. If a thought starts with what if, it’s probably an OCD thought.

2. If the chance of the feared situation is less than 10%, it’s just an OCD worry.

3. There is no way you can stop a thought. So don’t try to stop it.  Let it be there instead and just ignore it.

4. If you checked something more than 3 times it’s probably time to stop checking.

5. If the situation you are picturing is a farfetched one such as for example “getting a life threatening illness from a dirty door handle” just remember that the odds are very low or none and that there is a
lot of other things that can happen with higher odds such as for example, a car accident.

6. OCD has many different varieties. Just because you have the hand washing type of OCD today does not mean you will have it forever.

7. Do not hide your OCD. This particular disorder does seem to get worse with time so it is important to start treatment before it gets worse.

8. OCD is believed to be generic so if you have it, this means that someone in your family may have it too.

9. Do not be afraid to tell your doctor/therapist/psychiatrist what exactly is bothering you. OCD seems to target the exact same fears divided in around ten different categories, so chances are whatever you have to say they heard it before. Possibly word for word.

10. OCD can be at its worst early in the morning. That is because the serotonin levels are at their lowest in the morning. If you wake up and immediately feel bad do not continue to be in bed.  By getting out of bed you will help your brain refocus on daily tasks and reduce the energy devoted to OCD thoughts.

10 Ways to Getting Through a Bad OCD Day

1. Stay busy. Do not give yourself time to think or ruminate.

2. Eat healthy. A bad OCD day is not the time for too little or too much food.

3. Every time a thought pops into your head try to switch the channel in your brain to something else. It’s hard to do at first but it gets easier.

4. Label every thought as an OCD thought. This will train your brain to be able to subconsciously tell the difference between OCD and non-OCD thoughts.

5. Do not stay in bed. Make yourself get out of bed. The longer you stay in bed the worse your thoughts will get.

6. Make a list of things that need go get done in this day and do them. Do not pay attention to your thoughts.

7. Start an OCD journal. Write down what triggered your OCD and the degree of how bad your OCD is. I use 1 to 10.

8. Talk to someone you trust about your OCD. It may not help you feel easier about your OCD created worry, but it will help you feel like you are not alone.

9. Do a crossword puzzle or play video games.

10. Go shopping. Being in a busy place can help you concentrate on something other than your thoughts.

How To Get Over False Memory OCD

test1I think I should bring your attention to this type of OCD because it is almost never talked about. What makes this type of OCD particularly distressing is the fact that the event that triggered the feared situation has already happened.
Example:
A person is driving in a car. He hits a speed bump. Immediately he gets a thought “What if it wasn’t a speed bump, what if it was a person?”
Now let’s examine the thought closer. What if… is a very common OCD thought. Any thought that starts with what if should be immediately considered an OCD thought. By saying “what if it wasn’t a speed bump” the person is already acknowledging the fact that most likely it was a speed bump. This seems logical and rational so it gets included in the thought. In the last part, the person shows doubt. It basically says that maybe under some circumstance it was a person that was hit. Since OCD is a disorder of doubt, any OCD thought will contain doubt. This type of pattern is extremely common so you need to know it and be able to easily identify it. Yours may not match exactly but you will be able to see a resemblance.
How to react properly to false memory thoughts.

So now you have a thought that resembles a false memory thought. Since OCD is making you doubt it, you probably think that the thought might be true. Do not let yourself think back to when you think something happenedyou’re your mind starts going back to the situation immediately say to yourself:

I trust myself.
I am a good person.
I am not going to give OCD the power by taking this thought seriously.

Make this your mantra. Every time you think the thought remember this and repeat it to yourself.
